Speed equals development (metres per pedal stroke) times cadence times 60. Development is the gear ratio multiplied by wheel circumference.

Most cyclists are efficient around 80–100 rpm. Higher cadence reduces muscular strain; lower cadence loads muscles more but can suit climbing.
